Our youngest child, Breegan, is Autistic and our family is trying so hard to find the best opportunities for her. We have been blessed with professionals who are more than perfect for her at WSU’s Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, teachers and therapists in USD 259 who are loving and experienced, nursery workers at church who are willing to love her through her fear and occasional meltdowns, doctors who are patient and thorough.
We had a new experience this month that I was slightly (okay, extremely) anxious about: her first dentist appointment. My older kids have been going to the dentist every six months since they were little, but this was Breegan’s first cleaning. I was nervous about how Breegan would respond, I was nervous that she would be scared and she wasn’t able to communicate her feelings. My older two kiddos were awesome, they always have a good time at the dentist, weird as that sounds. Breegan cried, but the cleaning was accomplished and I actually left there feeling really, really good about our time at Dr. Michael Iseman’s (Wichita Pediatric Dentistry) office. Our hygienists, Tiffany and Sarah, were nothing short of perfect and Dr. Mike was calm and friendly despite a worked-up child.
My kids are treated with respect, they are well taken care of and every person who works there is a ton of fun and very friendly. What more could I ask for? Yes, there are televisions that the kids can watch while in the chair, balloons and prizes, a game room, coffee machine, etc., but that isn’t what makes it a good practice. It’s the people and the pride they take in their work, which shows up in how they treat their patients.
This isn’t just about bragging on our dentist, this is an example of what would make a great story for our magazine. Is there a teacher, doctor, dentist, friend, business owner, organization, activity, event, ANYTHING or ANYONE that has made an impact on you or your children? The possibilities are endless. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to thank them by letting Wichita Family Magazine consider sharing the story with other local families?
Next time there is a person or event that makes an impact on your life, shoot me an email letting me know about it. I would love to consider your story for a feature in our magazine!
